Back to Tutorial Index

To complete this tutorial, you will need a gradient sent on July 26, 2002 to AmeriYank's Friday Freebie Yahoo! Group list. Joining is 100% FREE. Once a week, usually Friday, you will receive an image, gradient, preset, tutorial, or other graphic-related fun thing.

Joining also entitles you to be the first to know about updates to AmeriYank's Graphics Farm, AmeriYank's Graphics Grotto, and AmeriYank's Apparel. As a member, you will be entitled to member discounts on AmeriYank's products, which are sometimes available for subscribers to AmeriYank's Friday Freebie. You will, also, occasionally, recieve a free sample of one of AmeriYank's products. This arrives in your email and is, usually, shown as a "Bonus".

To join, go to http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ameriyank

Place your email address and get your Yahoo! ID. You will need the ID to access the archives and obtain the gradient.

Once you have joined and are at the archives, search for the message dated "July 26, 2002". The gradient you need to do this tutorial can be found in the ZIP file.

If you need an UNzipping program, you can get a free evaluation of WINZIP at:
http://www.winzip.com

I have compressed the images for this tutorial as much as I dare, to limit download time. Some might appear a bit untrue to color for that reason. have also made this tutorial into several pages. This is also to limit the download time.

In this tutorial, we are going to make a texture from a gradient.

When we are finished, our texture will look like this (only without "sample" written on it).

final image for AmeriYank's Friday Freebie Tutorial dated August 2, 2002 .

You can use the finished product for background images on web pages, fills for new graphics, wallpaper for your computer, and anything your imagination can thinkup! Now let's get started.

Instructions for this tutorial are for Paint Shop Pro 7. You can easily make it in  6, using the slightly different techniques.

If you use another graphics program, you can make the image, too. But you will have to make adjustments for whatever program you use. You can easily do this in Adobe Photosho . Just be sure to make the adjustments for your particular program, as all graphics programs work a little differently from one another.

Follow the red numbers to be sure you do the tutorial in the right order.

1

First, open Paint Shop Pro, or whatever program you are using.

Next, go to "File", then "New".

I added the red letters to help you see better in this tutorial.

When the new window pops up, set it to read like the one on the left.

This will give you a new image that is 200 x 200 pixels, is 72 dots per inch (DPI) and has a white background.
